The vibrant history of Puerto Rican community organizing in New York City serves as a foundational blueprint for this unique youth leadership initiative.
Comité Noviembre launches the “Richie Perez Puerto Rican/Latino Youth Community Leadership Program” to empower the next generation of community organizers.

Comité Noviembre has announced the launch of its Youth Community Leadership Program, kicking off in the Fall of 2026. This free program honors the renowned Puerto Rican activist Richie Perez—a former Young Lord, exceptional organizer, and dedicated leader in the community’s struggle for social justice. The program will serve up to 25 NYC-based Puerto Rican and Latino students aged 16–23. Participants will gain real-world leadership experience, develop a deeper understanding of civic responsibility, and learn how to influence positive change in their communities. Harnessing over four decades of advocacy work for the Puerto Rican community in NYC, Comité Noviembre has partnered with vital cultural institutions for this initiative, including Boricua College, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO), the Bronx Heritage Music Hall, and the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI). "We are profoundly grateful to Latinos United for Change and Catholic Charities, whose funding will allow us to provide the next generation of community social activists with culturally relevant opportunities and collaborative spaces to develop leadership skills, engage directly with community leaders, and create meaningful change through youth-led projects addressing real community needs," stated Comité’s Chairwoman, Teresa Santiago.
